The letter, signed by clubs such as Crystal Palace, Brentford and West Ham, is addressed to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, new Twitter boss Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg the owner of Meta, who run both Facebook and Instagram.

The letter highlights the issues of online abuse of players, especially 'legal but harmful' abuse towards them which is not punishable by criminal action despite the hateful nature of the content.

It calls for the government to speed up the process of passing the Online Safety Bill through Parliament. Musk and Zuckerberg are urged not only to facilitate new legislation when it is passed, but to do more with the technology at their disposal to combat the amount of online abuse that is seen on social media.

As well as clubs the letter was also signed by the heads of the EFL, Football Supporters Association, the League Managers Association and Women in Football.
