League One: Wigan owners confirm deal in principle to sell club
Recently relegated Wigan Athletic have confirmed that they have accepted a proposal in principle to sell the club.
The Latics have been in financial difficulty for some time and failed to pay their players on time on several occasions, meaning they will start life back in League One on -8 points.
With more uncertainty over the financial stability of the club two of the board of directors resigned over the weekend, with Tom Markham and Oliver Gottmann citing the lack of clarity on when funding will be made available as the main reason they were stepping down.
Wigan released a statement confirming that a bid had been accepted subject to EFL approval:
'A deal has been agreed in principle for the sale of Wigan Athletic Football Club to a prospective new buyer - subject to EFL approval.
The prospective new owners have committed to resolving all outstanding liabilities at the earliest opportunity.
Further updates on this process will follow in due course.'
