Liverpool claim top spot as British sides progress in final round of new Champions League Group Stages

All five British sides have made it through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League, though Celtic and Manchester City face tough tests in the play-off round.

This season the Champions League format changed to a 36 team league table, with each side drawn against eight opponents across the group stage.

The top eight automatically secured a last 16 spot, whilst teams finishing between 9th-24th face an additional play-off round in February.

On Wednesday there were 18 matches taking place simultaneously as teams battles to remain in the competition, with sides in all but two of the fixtures still having a chance of qualifying.

Liverpool topped the table despite losing to PSV, having already secured a top two spot having won their previous seven matches.

Arsenal and Aston Villa also finished in the top eight with wins again Girona and Celtic respectively, with Villa ousting Atalanta who could only draw their final game.

Celtic still secured a play-off spot despite their loss, but will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich as they try and make the last 16.

Whichever of those European giants Celtic don't face will instead play Manchester City, who came from behind to win 3-1 and qualify, though they only finished above Dinamo Zagreb in 25th spot on goal difference.
