In the top flight, three teams were battling to avoid the drop with only one able to do so. In the end it was Everton, who started the day in 17th, that managed to do their bit by beating Bournemouth.

It meant that Leicester's win over West Ham was irrelevant and the former Premier League champions will be playing second tier football next season as will Leeds, who suffered a 4-1 humiliation at Elland Road against Spurs.

We already knew two of the teams that would replace them in the Premier League, but Luton Town joined Burnley and Sheffield United after a thrilling final against Coventry, eventually winning on penalties. 

Further down Sheffield Wednesday sealed a return to the Championship in the last minute of extra time against Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, whilst Carlisle United pulled off an upset beating Stockport County to move back into League One for the first time in nearly a decade.
