Ricky Martin Appointed Bristol Rovers' Director of Football

Former Stoke City technical director Ricky Martin will take over as Bristol Rovers' director of football this summer, replacing George Friend, who will step down at the end of the season after taking on the role in February 2024.

Martin was dismissed by Stoke City that same month, following just over a year in the position, and was succeeded by former Potters striker Jonathan Walters. Although he will officially assume his new role in the summer, Martin will join the club immediately, while Friend will remain in post until the end of the season to ensure a smooth transition.

Reflecting on his tenure, Friend expressed pride in the club's progress. "I am proud of the improvements we have achieved together in developing the club's staffing infrastructure, alongside a sustainable and exciting game model. The plans for upgraded training ground and stadium facilities promise to further elevate Bristol Rovers in the years to come," he told the club’s website.

He highlighted the club’s strong foundations, praising head coach Iñigo Calderón, a talented core of players, and the successful integration of young homegrown talent into the first-team setup. Friend, a former defender, previously played for Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, and Exeter City before retiring to take up his current role.

Speaking about his new role, Martin expressed enthusiasm for the club’s future. "It’s an exciting time to be joining Rovers," he said. "The first-team squad includes many young, exciting players who are still developing, while the academy has produced talented players like Jed Ward and Kofi Shaw, who have successfully stepped into the first-team environment.

"The club’s plans for growth—both on the footballing and operational sides—are impressive. I hope my skill set will help Bristol Rovers progress to the next level and beyond."
