Safe Standing Areas can be introduced in the Premier League and Championship from 2022/23

The Government have confirmed safe standing areas will be allowed ta Premier League and Championship grounds from the 2022/23 season.

It follows a pilot scheme undertaken by government involving several sides including both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Tottenham and Cardiff in the latter half of last season.

Changes to the Football Spectators Act allowing the move were tabled in Parliament on Monday.

"Thanks to a robust trial, thorough evidence and modern engineering, we are now ready to allow standing once again in our grounds," said Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries.

"We are not reintroducing terraces and only clubs which meet strict safety criteria will be permitted."

It will be the first time in 30 years top flight matches will have designated standing areas following the introduciton of all seater stadiums following the Hillsborough disaster in 1987, where 97 Liverpool fans died.
