Northampton Town announce loss despite record turnover

Northampton Town has reported an overall loss of £2.03 million for the financial year ending June 2024. This marks an increase of nearly £1 million compared to the previous year, when the club secured promotion from League Two. However, the club also recorded a record turnover of £6.74 million.

The Cobblers achieved an average home attendance of 6,841 at Sixfields during the season—the highest in 56 years.

Despite the financial loss, chairman Kelvin Thomas described the period as a success. The club’s annual financial report highlighted the challenges of balancing financial sustainability with maintaining a competitive playing budget.

"It is our wish to make the club financially sustainable in the medium to longer term. However, given the financial pressures currently affecting the game, achieving this while ensuring on-field success remains difficult," the report stated. "External support will be necessary for us and many other clubs, and we hope that the anticipated appointment of a football regulator will represent a significant step forward."

The club’s turnover increased by 31% compared to the previous year. However, Northampton Town generated just £256,409 from player transfers, a significant drop from the £1.2 million recorded in the 2022-23 season.

Additionally, the club has commenced a phased opening of the new East Stand at Sixfields, a project expected to exceed £5 million in total costs. Construction initially began in 2014 but was halted due to contractual disputes, only resuming in the summer of 2023. The club aims to complete the stand before the end of the current season.
